The NWP Challenge

The weather influences almost every sector imaginable:
marine, energy, aviation, agriculture, entertainment, to name
a few. It stands to reason, then, that an accurate prediction
of the weather would be of enormous benefit to decision-makers
involved in these markets. For decades, meteorologist and mathematicians
have been working on methods to improve upon the science of modeling
the weather (numerical weather prediction, or NWP) in order to
generate a single precise weather simulation.

| Such a forecast, however, leaves decision-makers with simply a
YES/NO answer to weather-related questions, and no sense of certainty
in a model simulation or quantification of probability-of-occurrence.
In addition, even small errors associated with initial input to
an NWP model or the physical approximations made in a model can
lead to YES/NO predictions that are completely wrong, giving decision-makers
no warning, and leaving them perpetually vulnerable to the disastrous
and costly "element of surprise." |
